HomeView: Apple’s first smart home display
HomeView is a touchscreen hub for the Home app and your smart home devices, which also handles FaceTime calls, music and web browsing. It comes as a tabletop model or a wall-mounted model, both $299 in the US. The wall version needs a separately sold mount. Pre-orders opened on 13 October and it’s available from 13 November.
The catch: as of launch, Apple isn’t selling HomeView in the EU, because Siri AI isn’t available there. The UK is on the launch list.
HomePod mini 2: new chip, new colours, new glow
The HomePod mini 2 keeps the familiar ball shape but moves to a newer S10 chip, comes in green, pink, blue, midnight and white, and adds Sound Glow, a light on top that pulses with your music. It’s $149 in the US and arrives on 30 October.
Apple says the upgraded Siri AI will come to it in a future software update, so don’t buy it expecting that on day one. It also costs more than the original did at launch.
Apple TV 4K (4th generation)
The new Apple TV 4K costs $299 in the US, gets a faster chip and hands-free Siri, and arrives on 13 November in the US and many other countries. It can anchor a four-speaker surround setup with HomePod mini 2 or full-size HomePod speakers. That’s a big price jump on the previous model, so if you already have a recent Apple TV, there’s no rush.
Should you buy now or wait?
- Wait for reviews on HomeView: it’s a brand-new product category for Apple.
- HomePod mini 2 is the safest buy if you want a small Apple speaker, but expect Siri AI later.
- Apple TV 4K: worth it mainly if your current box is old, or you want the new surround setup.
- In the EU? HomeView isn’t on sale there yet.
