How to read an influencer review

  • Look for the disclosure. “Ad”, “Sponsored”, “Paid partnership” or “gifted” means there’s a commercial relationship.
  • Watch more than one reviewer, ideally one who bought the product and one who has used it for months.
  • Separate the unboxing from the review. First impressions videos can’t tell you about battery life or durability.
  • Check who benefits from the link. Affiliate links in descriptions earn the creator commission (like some links on our site).

The disclosure rules in the US, UK and EU

In the US, the FTC’s Endorsement Guides say influencers must clearly disclose any material connection to a brand, including payment, free products or discounts, and the FTC’s “Disclosures 101” guide explains how. In the UK, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) expects paid, gifted and affiliate content to be labelled up front with a clear label such as “Ad”. In the EU, hidden advertising is banned under consumer protection law, and several countries have their own influencer rules.

Frequently asked questions

Do tech YouTubers get to keep the products they review?
It varies. Some return review units, some keep them, and some buy products themselves. Where a gift or payment is involved, they’re expected to disclose it.
Does ViralGadgets pay or work with these creators?
No. We list them because they’re widely watched, and we link to their channels so you can see their reviews yourself. We don’t claim what any creator thinks of a product.
