Steam Deck OLED: Volt’s verdict

Valve’s refreshed handheld swapped in a stunning HDR OLED screen and a bigger battery. Reviewers call it the definitive Steam Deck, but not a Steam Deck 2.

A research-based rating: the ViralGadgets team compares published reviews, long-term tests and specs. We haven't tested it hands-on. How Volt rates

What reviewers love

  • Vivid HDR OLED screen with deep blacks and a 90Hz refresh rate
  • Better battery life and faster charging than the original
  • Lighter, cooler and quieter
  • Faster Wi-Fi and the easy SteamOS experience

What gives them pause

  • No real performance boost; demanding new games can struggle
  • Battery is still a weak spot in heavy games
  • Still bulky
  • Installing non-Steam games is fiddly

Best for: PC gamers with a Steam library who want a polished handheld.

Skip it if: You already own an original Steam Deck and mostly play docked.

Why everyone is talking about it

The Steam Deck is still the handheld every new PC handheld is compared to, and the OLED model is the version most reviewers recommend.

What the reviews agree on

Tom’s Guide called it the best the device has ever been. TechRadar called it the definitive Steam Deck but harder to justify for existing owners. Stuff summed it up as the ultimate first-generation Steam Deck rather than a sequel. Everyone praised the screen; battery gains were welcome but not dramatic, and performance is unchanged.

Volt’s take

For a new buyer with Steam games, it’s still the smart choice. Compare it with the pricier ROG Xbox Ally X and the Switch 2 in our handheld comparison.
