Kodak Charmera: Volt’s verdict

The blind-box keychain camera that kept selling out. Reviewers agree on two things: it’s a lot of fun, and the photos are terrible. Whether that’s a problem is up to you.

A research-based rating: the ViralGadgets team compares published reviews, long-term tests and specs. We haven't tested it hands-on. How Volt rates

What reviewers love

  • Tiny, cute and genuinely pocketable on a keyring
  • Lo-fi, retro-looking photos with built-in filters
  • Inexpensive, and fun as a gift or collectible
  • The blind-box colours add to the appeal

What gives them pause

  • 1.6MP fixed-focus lens: soft, low-detail images
  • Struggles badly in low light
  • Short battery life, and you can’t shoot while it charges
  • Fiddly menus for deleting photos and changing settings
  • Rare editions attract scalpers and inflated resale prices

Best for: Teens and collectors who love the lo-fi, disposable-camera look.

Skip it if: You want photos sharp enough to print or keep: a second-hand compact digicam is far better.

Why everyone is talking about it

The Charmera mixes several things TikTok loves at once: blind boxes, keyrings, nostalgia and deliberately imperfect photos. It sold out within a day at launch in 2025, and restocks kept disappearing. Read the full story in our Charmera explainer.

What the reviews agree on

Reviewers are unusually unanimous. PetaPixel called the image quality objectively bad. Amateur Photographer was harsher still, while TechRadar called it the worst camera its reviewer had used, yet still loved it for being so retro. Tom’s Guide summed it up as a camera meant for fun, not serious photography. Results are best outdoors in good light, at a metre or two from your subject.

Volt’s take

Rated as a camera, it would score lower. Rated as what it really is (a fun, inexpensive collectible that takes charming bad photos), it delivers. Buy from official stockists, never pay scalper prices, and if you want the retro look with better results, see our guide to the digicam comeback.
