What is the Kodak Charmera?
The Charmera is a tiny digital camera designed to hang from a keyring or bag. It’s made by Reto, a Hong Kong brand that licenses the Kodak name. It shoots photos and video with a 1.6-megapixel sensor and has built-in retro filters and photo frames.
Why it went viral
It combines several things Gen Z already loves: nostalgia for older digital cameras, imperfect “real” photos instead of polished phone shots, keyrings as accessories, and blind boxes, where you don’t know which colour you’ll get until you open it, with a rare see-through edition to chase. When it launched in 2025, the first drop and the restock each sold out in under a day, as reported by youth-trends researcher YPulse.
What it can and can’t do
- Good for: fun, grainy, vintage-looking snaps; photo dumps; a collectible gift.
- Not good for: sharp photos, low light or replacing your phone camera. At 1.6MP, image quality is deliberately basic.
Buying tips
- Buy from official stockists where possible. Rare editions resell for many times the retail price, and scalpers and fakes follow.
- Check what’s in the box: you may need a memory card and a cable.
