Is the PS5 Pro worth it? What reviewers say

Sony’s more powerful PS5 launched in November 2024 to strong graphics and a divisive price. Here’s the reviewer consensus, and who it actually suits.

What’s different

The PS5 Pro has a more powerful graphics chip, a 2TB drive and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s AI upscaling. In supported games you can get sharper images and smoother frame rates at the same time.

The disc drive catch

It launched at $699.99 in the US without a disc drive; the add-on drive and vertical stand are sold separately. If you already have a PS5 Slim drive, it works with the Pro.

What reviewers said

Digital Trends called it a worthwhile upgrade for tech enthusiasts that most people can live without. Laptop Mag described it as Sony’s most divisive console. Reviewers agreed the gains show most on a large 4K TV, and are subtle at normal viewing distances.

Who should upgrade

  • Yes: enthusiasts with a big 4K TV who care about image quality.
  • No: casual players, 1080p TV owners, and anyone happy with their PS5.
