What it is
The ROG Xbox Ally is a Windows 11 gaming PC shaped like a controller, with a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz screen. What makes it different from earlier Windows handhelds is the Xbox full-screen experience: it boots into a console-style Xbox interface instead of the Windows desktop, so it feels more like a games console. It plays your PC games from Xbox, Game Pass for PC, Steam and other stores.

What reviewers said
The Ally X was widely praised for performance and comfortable grips, with Notebookcheck noting the Xbox interface is meant to make Windows easier to use on a handheld. The common catches: it’s expensive, and battery life in demanding games is short, as on most PC handhelds. A newer OLED version, the Ally X20, has since been announced at a higher price, according to Tom’s Guide.
Should you buy one?
- Get the Ally X if you want to play big new PC games on the go and the budget is there.
- Get the standard Ally for lighter games and Game Pass, but compare it with a Steam Deck first.
- Get a Switch 2 if you mostly want Nintendo games or a family console.
