TikTok made me buy it: which viral gadgets are actually worth it?

Some viral gadgets earn a permanent place in your life. Others end up in a drawer by February. Here’s our honest take on the big categories.

Usually worth it

  • Magnetic power banks: genuinely useful every day. Stick to known brands.
  • Clip-on wireless mics: the cheapest big upgrade for anyone who films themselves.
  • E-readers: BookTok’s favourite gadget, with weeks of battery.
  • Item trackers: small, cheap and a lifesaver for keys and luggage, if you get the one that matches your phone.

Worth it, with a catch

  • Ninja CREAMi: brilliant if you’ll actually prep and freeze bases a day ahead; loud while it runs.
  • Instant cameras: pure joy, but film is an ongoing cost.
  • LED strip lights: great for the price, but adhesive can damage paint.

Check reviews carefully

  • Ultra-cheap mini projectors: often overstate brightness and resolution (“supports 4K” is not native 4K). Look for reviews that test in a lit room.
  • Portable blenders: fine for shakes, but struggle with ice and frozen fruit.
  • Big-brand beauty tech sold at a huge discount on social ads: often fake.
