Walking pads: are under-desk treadmills worth it?

Walking pads turned working from home into a step-count opportunity. Here’s how to tell if one suits you, and how to use it safely.

What a walking pad is

A walking pad is a slim, folding treadmill without big handrails, designed for slow walking while you work, watch TV or take calls. Most are built for walking speeds, not running, and slide under a sofa or bed when you’re done.

Who it suits

  • People working from home who sit most of the day.
  • Anyone who wants gentle movement during calls or TV.
  • Not runners: if you want to run, buy a proper treadmill.

Setting up safely

  • Check the weight limit and maximum speed in the specs.
  • Raise your desk so your elbows are at about 90 degrees; a standing desk or desk riser helps.
  • Start slowly and keep typing to simple tasks at first.
  • Use the safety clip or remote stop if it has one, and keep pets and children away while it’s running.
  • Put it on a firm, flat surface; a mat reduces noise and vibration.

The neighbour test

Motors hum and footsteps thud. If you live above someone, check reviews that mention noise, and use a mat. Browse options in our wellness finder.
